In the current religious right society, we are taught that having an abortion is a sin and something to be ashamed of. But the truth is that many, many women have had abortions and there's nothing to be ashamed of. The decision to have an abortion is a very difficult and personal one to make, but women do what they feel they need to do for the sake of themselves and their families and no one can truly judge someone else without walking in their shoes. I, myself, have had an abortion and though I regret getting pregnant, I have never regretted the abortion. I felt then, as I feel now, that I made the right decision for me at the time. Given the same situation, I would make the same decision again. This book is long overdue and I'm glad it's come out.Product details

1 in 3 These Are Our Stories edition by Advocates for Youth Debra Hauser Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
This collection really illustrates how different and personal each woman's story about abortion is - from young women unprepared to parent, to married women with children who couldn't manage another child, to women who experienced the tragedy of fetal anomalies in a wanted pregnancy. Some of the stories are from before abortion became legal, while some women had their abortions recently but still faced barriers. Reading them all, you understand how important it is to talk about this stuff - it's a culturally imposed silence that is letting fundies chip away at the right to abortion.
Like all books on the issue of abortion from the pro-choice point of view, 1 in 3 fails to address the most critical component of the issue--the developing human being in the womb. As it argues for the choice of women to terminate their pregnancies, it repeatedly denies every choice that could ever be made by preborn babies. These tiny male and female human beings are denied all their future choices by this one tragic choice of their parents/mothers. Mothers and fathers, who've already left the womb and made a myriad of choices, share their testimonies and what led them to make the choice for abortion. Difficult as these parents circumstances might have been, these stories all elevate the parent's choices over their child's. Choices like sex, contraception, school, careers, marriage, faith, and any other choice one can think of are withheld from these little ones for no offense of their own. Abortion is of no consequence if what is lost is not human, but if in fact the baby is human, which science, biology, technology, faith, and common sense all reveal, then abortion is a great evil and one of the most horrible acts ever to champion.
This small book has a big story to tell anyone who wonders about the importance of protecting Roe v. Wade.
These first hand accounts although not ground breaking are very compelling. Women should without government interference be accountable for their own decisions, their own bodies. And as with any healthcare issue should be an essential part of healthcare coverage.
I am a staunch supporter of Advocates for Youth and women's rights. That is why I bought this book. I didn't expect it to be great literature and it's not, but it does tell some heartfelt stories in the words of the women who had the experiences. I hope it will let young women know that they are not alone.
