Lost Years The Quest for Avalon Richard Monaco 9781105647543 Books Reviews

Lost Years comes together nicely in Book Two. Good reading is a consequence of good writing, and the writing here is excellent.
Another classic from Richard Monaco. Book four of the Parsival series. Lovers of Arthurian fiction will enjoy this as a stand alone novel or as a continuation of the Parsival epic.
Thirty-five years ago, Richard Monaco published his first novel,Parsival Or a Knight's Tale. This re-imagining of the Arthurian/Grail myth became an instant best-seller, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and spawned four sequels (the third of which was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist). Now, Monaco has returned to medieval England to tell another of Parsival's "lost" adventures (the fourth book, Blood and Dreams, told of an adventure occurring just before the second book, The Grail War).

Though this story takes place literally minutes after ending of the first novel, it works equally well as a standalone novel. All of the pertinent information a reader would need from the first book is so seamlessly wound into the narrative that the new reader is never left with the feeling that he or she is coming in on the second act of a five act play.

This book deals with far more than just a retelling of the Holy Grail story, though. It uses the Percival legend to examine man's conflict between his duty to his family, his country and himself as Parsival decides to leave his home in an attempt to regain his lost innocence and set his life on a better path. The relationship between Parsival and his wife, Layla, brings up questions of marital fidelity, both physical and emotional. Finally, Parsival's estranged relationship with his son Lohengrin (which reaches its climax in later volume) becomes a frank look at how even the best of us can, through our own self absorption, fail as parents despite all our best intentions.

This book is just as good (and in many ways even better) than any of the previous volumes. Monaco has not lost his touch; he's gotten better with age.
Lost Years The Quest for Avalon is a superb book, but I'm not surprised because Monaco has a strong cult following that raves about his previous works. I have not read the previous books by Richard Monaco, but didn't find that to be a problem, because this book stands on its own. The writing is superb in this novel that does more than just tell another Arthurian story, but examines the relationship of a man - Parsival - and his family while dealing with Morgana the Witch in a post-apocalyptic world that is filled with cults, and wild characters that push the reader to the edge. The novel is written so well that it draws you into the story to the point you can physically feel the scenes as they unfold. I have read books with beautiful writing, but stories that were hard to follow; and I've read great stories with simple writing. This book is a pleasure to read because it combines beautiful writing with a great story. This is more difficult to do than you might expect, but Monaco pulled it off.

Parsival is described well and the reader is quickly able to establish this character in their mind thanks to descriptions like, "He was known as moody, a fool for women, a knight who'd lost interest in performance and battle but was too sophisticated for rustic retirement." It doesn't take one long to realize that Monaco has mastered a lost time, and if not mastered, created. Only a true storyteller, with a keen eye for detail, and a mind capable of managing an encyclopedia of facts could put bring all the pieces together. I'm now a fan of Richard Monaco and will be devouring his other books. If you are a fan of novels like the Game of Thrones series, the Arthurian Legends, or just a fan of great books you must read Lost Years The Quest for Avalon.

Lost Years(Parsival)is another terrific book by Richard Monaco and a continuation in the exciting and well written Parsival series. Richard's writing is alive with new and vivid metaphors and well formed sentences that keep one glued to to written page.
