Although this novel is more or less constructed as a mystery story it works primarily as an instrument of social and intellectual criticism.In the United States, the author is probably best known for his work in the realm of of science fiction, but this book isn't science fiction. Instead, US readers will discover a remarkable view of a small segment of Indian society, jet-set intellectuals swimming in what might be called global culture. The characters in Half of What I Say are recognizable social types, all are native Indians living in India, but many are immersed in an intellectual milieu which mingles Indian culture with American and European culture. When characters in this book talk, old and new ideas from the West, jostle with US slang.and references to icons of Indian literary life. The book was not intended for US readers, but if you can get a copy you'll be treated to a fresh, penetrating, sometimes comic, sometimes satiric study of a strata of Indian society utterly unknown to American readers.
